Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains how Khaya App Studio ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our mobile applications, including What's for Dinner? ("the App"), and our website at khayaappstudio.com.

By using our App or website, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

1. Who We Are

2. Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information:

Account Information

  • Email address and display name (provided at sign-up)
  • Profile photo (optional, if you choose to upload one)
  • Dietary preferences and household role (e.g., admin, member)

Household & App Data

  • Household name and member list (for the shared household feature)
  • Meal plan selections, recipe votes, and swipe history
  • Pantry items and shopping lists you create
  • Theme suggestions and voting activity

Usage Data

  • App interactions (e.g., screens visited, features used)
  • Device type, operating system version, and app version
  • Crash reports and error logs (used only for debugging)

Push Notification Tokens

  • If you grant notification permission, we store a device token to send you voting reminders and meal plan alerts. You can revoke this at any time in your device settings.

Payment Information

  • We do not collect or store your payment details. All in-app purchases are processed by Apple App Store or Google Play Store and managed through RevenueCat. We only receive confirmation of subscription status (active / expired).

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account and household
  • Deliver the core features of the App (meal planning, voting, pantry, shopping lists)
  • Send push notifications you have opted into (voting reminders, meal alerts)
  • Process subscription status to unlock premium features
  • Diagnose bugs and improve app stability
  • Respond to your support requests or inquiries

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

4. Third-Party Services

The App relies on the following third-party services, each with their own privacy policies:

  • Supabase is our backend database and authentication provider. Data is stored in Supabase's cloud infrastructure. Supabase Privacy Policy
  • Spoonacular is our recipe data API. Recipe search queries are proxied through our backend; your personal data is not shared with Spoonacular. Spoonacular Terms

  • Expo (by Expo.dev) is the platform used to build and deliver the app, including push notification delivery. Expo Privacy Policy
  • Anthropic Claude API powers premium AI features (recipe matching and leftover remix). Queries are processed via our backend; no personally identifiable information is sent to Anthropic. Anthropic Privacy Policy

5. Data Storage & Security

Your data is stored securely on Supabase's servers. We implement row-level security (RLS) to ensure that household data is accessible only to authenticated members of that household. Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device using platform-native encrypted storage.

While we take reasonable precautions to protect your data, no method of transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account and app data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data and household data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.

7. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete data
  • Delete your account and associated data
  • Withdraw consent for push notifications at any time via device settings
  • Export your data by contacting us and we will provide it in a portable format

8. Children's Privacy

Our App is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
